Novak Djokovic (SRB) [4] bends to make a play against Jesse Witten (USA) during a third round match on Day 6 of the 2009 US Open.
American Jesse Witten, 26, started off the year ranked No. 397 in the world. As recently as this past June, he was ranked just No. 350 and playing in $10,000 Futures events in obscure locales. Players receive just one can of balls for the match and at the end of the week, the tournament winner earns a little more than $1,000. Witten had never won a tour-level match in his entire life until this year’s US Open, where, with his current No. 276 ranking, he was forced to win three rounds in qualifying just to get to the main draw.
Djokovic avoided what would have been a monumental upset with a 7-6 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-4 win
